Recovery

I've watched the Deep Space Nine opus on Netflix, as a kind of recovery from a deep blow in my life (of my own creation).

It's Only A Paper Moon (160th episode, Season 7, episode 10) is about Nog's recovery.  On the previous episode Nog gets his leg blown off in a battle, and he's gotten a replacement leg.  The doctors say he doesn't need to limp, doesn't need a cane.  He's not responding to therapy at Star Fleet, and he doesn't respond to the space station counselor, Ezri Dax, and so he just listens to "I'll be seeing you," over and over again.  His roommate, gets sick of the song and says he can't play it any more in their apartment, so he goes to the holosuite, where Vic Fontaine, played by James Darren, sings the song.  Somehow Nog decided to live in the holosuite.  He starts to run the casino, like a good Ferengi, expanding.  And then they realize Nog is better.

What is sweet about the episode is that Nog gets to determine his own recovery, and it is open ended.  He can take the time he wants.  But when they realize he's better, not limping and re-energize, he's pushed back out into the world to confront his fears.

"Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future showed that cold blooded murder, treachery, gambling, prostitution, drugs, poverty, and crime are no longer characteristic of humans"  (This is a quote from Wikipedia about the DS9 episode Honor Among Thieves.)  Also there's a kind of basic lack of struggle for existence.  With this freedom they work to struggle against larger problems.

Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in a world like that?  I prefer a more utopian slant than dystopian slant in my science fiction.
