homelessness and race

1. There's an interesting article in the times profiling someone who is homeless.

2. Quote from Beverly Daniel Tatum's book why are all the black kids sitting together in the cafeteria?: "If viewing onself as a group member threatens one's self-definition, making the paradigm shift from individual to group membership will be painful." She notes this when people who are white think about the oppression their race has put onto minorities. This resonated with my experience. I recommend this book.
